I chose to highlight this little quote I made throughout my e-portfolio as it manages to capture so much of my teaching values in such few words. Community has always been an incredibly important aspect of my identity, as well as something that led me towards teaching. incorporating community within a classroom can help provide relevance, self-identity, and increased understanding of ones environment within student’s education.
I was given the opportunity to do my second practicum in Dawson Creek. I visited many museums there to gain a deeper understanding of the community, culture, and history. During my undergrad, I spent lots of time archiving old Peace River Newspapers from the 1930’s, so I was very excited to see the original building at the Walter Wright Pioneer Park.In one of the museums I visited, I found an old map of BC, pre-Williston Lake. I thought it was so cool, and so did my social studies 10 students, as we were just learning about BC Dams the day prior. This grain elevator was my bedroom view every morning! The whole street used to be full of community grain elevators, but this is the last one remaining. It has been repurposed as an art museum and railway/cultural museum, which served as a great resource for both of my practicum II classes!
